The Radio Sunderland Archive

History

Radio Sunderland was founded in 1953 and since then we have moved and refitted our studios several times, and have been involved in many events in and around Sunderland.

In this part of the website you will find a selection of old audio recordings and photographs from the past 60 odd years.

Sadly, only a fraction of what we have done over the years has been documented. We have no record of either the original 1960's set up at what was then the General Hospital or the later Hylton Road block studios.

If anyone has any photographs or audio recordings of Radio Sunderland we would very much appreciate a copy to allow us to add to our archives, see the 'contact us' section for more details.

We do have a few rare recordings, there's a song from a live recording made by Radio Sunderland of the Scottish folk duo Robin Hall and Jimmie Macgregor. It was recorded during "shipyard fortnight" in the old Seaburn Hall around 1975 - if you know differently please get in touch!

Over the years our members have managed to do some fabulous celebrity interviews. we have a couple for you here. Roy Orbison gave what was probably one of his last UK interviews while on tour to Len Brewer on the 17th April 1977. There is also an interview with Paul Daniels talking with Bill Mantle, which was probably recorded in the early 1990's. There is a "promo" to celebrate 60 years on air when we obtained a licence to broadcast for 10 days live across the city on 87.7 FM during December 2013
