Radio Sunderland for Hospitals has come a long way in the seventy plus years we have been broadcasting.
From initially being on-air for just a few hours once a week or so during Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United home games, we now broadcast a variety of programmes direct to the patients bedsides and online 24 hours a day.
By using the links on this page the you can listen online while you discover what's on Radio Sunderland at the moment.
We also broadcast a series of short public service announcements throughout our daily programmes.
They are included very much like advertisements are in the programmes of commercial radio stations, in fact we carry messages from the NHS, government departments and national charities that can also be heard on public radio as well as local home grown announcements that we have helped to produce.
Our “Notice board” is intended to provide and publicise information on health promotion and wellbeing, prevention of ill health or injury, details of benefits, services, support organisations and assistance available to those suffering or have suffered illness or injury and their carers.
If you would like us to produce an announcement for you why not contact us for further information.
If you are a patient or know someone who is in hospital find out how to get a favourite piece of music played in our request programme "Ward Call"
To listen to our programme showcase, just click on play below and hear a taster of some of our programmes.
One of our most popular programmes is the patients request programme "Ward Call".
Requests are broadcast live between 8pm and 9pm on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday evenings.
In case you miss it, there are another two chances to hear it, at 2 o'clock in the morning and then again at 2 o'clock the following afternoon.
We have two rules for Ward Call, if a patient has requested something and we have it then we will guarantee to play it, secondly, the patient will always get a mention.
There are a two ways you can get to hear your favourite tune in Ward Call.
Firstly, talk to one of our volunteers.
They make regular visits to the wards in the Sunderland Royal, meeting patients and collecting requests from them for that evenings Ward Call.
Or use our Request Form to send in a record request for Sunday, Monday or Wednesday evening.
The link will open a Google form in a new page.
Our normal programme schedule will be interupted to bring live coverage of Sunderland AFC's home games. The start time of "Sport Scene" will depend on kick-off time.
When the kick-off is at 3pm on a Saturday, Sport Scene will be on the air from 2pm until 6pm.
Football commentary is where it all started for us and we still cover every Sunderland A.F.C. home game.
We have a dedicated sports team, with commentators in the media area at the Stadium of Light.
"Why can't I hear Sunderland AFC football commentaries via the website 'Listen' button?"
Radio Sunderland for Hospitals only holds a licence to broadcast live football commentary to local hospitals.
Our Internet service is available across the UK and around the world and therefore we need to provide an alternative service to our online listeners instead.
We apologise for any inconvenience this causes, but of course hospital patients can still listen for free to the live commentary on all SAFC home games provided by Radio Sunderland by tuning their bedside units to "Hospital Radio" which can be found by pressing the "Radio" button and selecting "Channel 1".
Click a tab to see the programmes for that day, follow the highlighted links for more information about that programme (best viewed in landscape).
