Radio Sunderland for Hospitals is a registered charity, (No. 1073012) and was established in 1953 to provide a personal bedside radio service to the patients in the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
We are an entirely voluntary organisation that is totally self-supporting. Funds are raised throughout the year by our members under the guidance of a one of our Management Team.
Fundraising activities have included collections at local supermarkets, providing a public address system at St Benedict's Hospice and members taking part in the Boxing Day Dip at Seaburn.
We need to raise sufficient funds during the year to not only cover our day-to-day running cost, but also to enable us to grow - to repair and replace old or obsolete equipment.
The landscape of radio broadcasting has changed immensely since we began, from shellac (78's) through vinyl, CD to digital audio storage, the speed of change, especially in the last ten years or so, has been breathtaking!

We are also very grateful to those families who in the past that have made gifts in remembrance of their loved ones and to those that have left us a bequest in their will.
If you have an event that you need a P.A. system for, then we may be able to help.
One of the ways Radio Sunderland raises funds is by making available for hire our high quality public address system. The system is suitable for a variety of events, both indoors and out.
Over years our PA equipment has been used at numerous summer fetes, carnivals and open days. If you've got a long memory, you may even remember us providing the PA equipment for the now defunct North East Motor Show when it was held on the Seaburn Show field!
The basic system comprises a microphone (wireless if required), a mixer and amplifier and one pair of loudspeakers. As every situation and requirement is different please get in touch if you have a specific need, we can cover just about any eventuality.
We are in the unique position in that we have a captive audience!
Radio Sunderland provides a free service on channel one and is the most listened to station on the hospital network. Many patients enjoy listening to our programmes for the duration of their hospital stay.
On their return home, some patients continue to listen by joining our growing band of regular online listeners.
